UFC 203 is fast approaching with only 3 days until fight night. We are in for a treat with the heavyweights when newly crowned title holder Stipe Miocic attempts to make his first title defence in his home town of Cleveland Ohio against feared striker Alistair Overeem. Find our UFC 203 betting tips & predictions below!
In addition to this we are treated with a brilliant co-main event with former heavyweight title holder Jiu-Jitsu ace Fabricio Werdum looking to get back in the winning column with a rematch against 6’7 Travis Browne. This is a replacement fight as Werdum was originally matched up against Ben Rothwell who was unfortunately injured weeks out.
One of the most shocking match-ups that will take place at UFC 203 will be new comer Micky Gall vs WWE superstar CM Punk. This is interesting for a variety of reasons with the obvious being CM Punk has never fought a MMA or any other combat sport for that matter in his life. The outcome seems obvious but do the betting odds mirror this line of thought?
This UFC event definitely has more opportunities for us who are betting on the night compared to last weeks fight night in Hamburg. We see competitive betting lines and this is because of the more intriguing match ups at UFC 203 compared to relatively unknown fighters on the European card.
Lets take a look at the main card match ups
Overeem vs Micoc – Betting odds and predictions
Newly crowned heavyweight champion Stipe Micoc is riding a wave of success right now after starching UFC 203 co-main event fighter Fabricio Werdum in Fabricio’s home town of Curitiba, Brazil at UFC 198 back in May. Fabricio was beginning to be in talks as one of the greatest heavyweights in MMA of all time after his finishes of both Fedor Emelianenko and Cain Velasquez.
Stipe dispatched of Fabricio in less than 3 minutes with a huge right hand as he was back pedalling from a charging Fabricio. Stipe has risen to MMA stardom quietly since he debuted in the UFC in 2011 only 1 year after his MMA debut. Stipe relies on his uncharacteristically quick and accurate hands for a heavyweight and can fall back on his division 1 level wrestling when he needs to.
Nonetheless he has a massive task in front of him when pitted against the once most feared fighter in the history of MMA and kickboxing Alistair Overeem.
Alistair has had a noticeably up & down career spanning over two decades with some huge wins as well as some less than satisfying losses. One thing you cannot deny is that Overeem is one of the most credentialed fighters in the history of combat sports, including Dream, Strikeforce and K1 heavyweight championship belts.
The strengths for Overeem are obvious with his elite kickboxing skills as well what I believe are his most underestimated skills being his wrestling and ground game with 19 out of his 41 wins coming by way of submission. Whereas his weaknesses are well known namely his durability. Overeem has been stopped by KO/TKO over 10 times during the course of his career and chins can only get worse.
So who do I bet on?
This spells trouble for Overeem against Stipe’s fast and lazer accurate boxing skills. For Overeem he needs to stay out of the short boxing range and use his newly found Jackson-Wink economical striking to move around Stipe and most importantly not let Stipe dictate the pace. He can do this using his front oblique kicks as well as using the occasional step in knee. What we know is Overeem can shut anybodies lights off with punches, kicks and knees but he HAS to be conservative and NOT engage in a brawl with the harder chinned Stipe
It will be a tough fight and its always a ‘pick-em’ at heavyweight due to their power but I want to believe if played correctly we can make some money on the underdog here.
If you’re going against the grain with youbetyah that’s absolutely fine especially at heavyweight. There are still some good odds with Stipe as high as 1.73 favourite as indicated below.
